Enhancing Success for English Learners: Strategies for Content Area Teachers

Course Overview

Approximately one in five students attending U.S. public schools speaks a language other than English at home or speaks English with difficulty. More than 150 languages are currently spoken in schools across the nations.

All teachers are charged with the task of adequately preparing all students, including English learners, for adequate completion of the current grade-level and successful transition to the next grade level. The continued increase in English learners and their persistent under-performance make opportunities for teachers to develop relevant capacity essential.

This course is intended for content area in-service (or pre-service) educators and support staff interested in improving engagement and academic outcomes for English learners.

Objectives

• Know the background (including research on language, culture, and identity) related to language development for students who speaks a language other than English at home or speaks English with difficulty.

• Understand and be able to select appropriate instructional strategies for supporting English learners in the content area classroom.

• Be able to look for and identify student actions that indicate success or opportunities for additional scaffolding.

• Understand mindsets and how to select and implement strategies to enhance teacher/student relationship and engagement.

• Possess enhanced self- and collective efficacy around ways to support English learners.

Requirements

Successful course completion includes:

1) Classroom scenario identifying appropriate teacher and student actions aligned to course content for supporting the learning of English learners.

2) Plan for integration of strategies gained from course into daily practice with English learners.
