What is Adult Education?
Adult education happens whenever adults learn new information, new skills or better ways to interact with the ever changing world in which we live. These educational activities can occur in solitary settings where adults are learning on their own through reading, the use of media or any other self-directed activity. It can also occur in more formal settings such as:
Business and Industry
- Careers in Training and Development
Colleges and Universities
- Careers in Education Administration
- Careers in Student Affairs (Higher Education)
- Careers in Adult Literacy and Remedial Education
Hospital, Counseling, and Health Settings
Churches, Social Justice, or Political Organizations
What can I do with a degree in Adult Learning and Development?
Alumni from the ALD program responding to the 2005 survey indicated that they are successful in a variety of positions in an assortment of adult education settings:
- Directors or managers of continuing education, nursing homes, adult basic education programs, HRD training programs, and diagnostic and instructional services, and local museums
- Trainers, curriculum developers and program planners in business and industry
- Self-employed and running their own training consulting service
- Higher education careers working in community colleges or universities in continuing education, students services, and academic affairs.
- After pursing a doctoral degree they are professors at four year universities (for example, in Adult Education, Business Administration, and Higher Education,)

How much do people with M.Ed. degrees earn?
Based on the results of the 2005 survey of ALD alumni who have graduated from the program since 1998, the average salary is $48,000. 15% indicated that they made under $25,000 annually and 25% made more than $70,000 a year.
